Prayer is a vital part of a Muslim’s life. More than just a request to Allah, prayer is a form of worship and recognition of His Oneness (Tawheed). In this article, we will discuss the importance of prayer, the etiquette of praying, and how prayer reflects our humility and dependence on Allah.
Prayer as Worship
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala states in the Qur’an, “Ud’uuni astajib lakum.” (Call upon Me, and I will respond to you). This verse emphasizes that prayer is a form of worship that is highly recommended in Islam. Furthermore, those who refrain from praying are considered to neglect their worship of Allah, which can lead them to ruin. This demonstrates how essential it is to continually pray and seek His assistance.
Prayer and Humility
A sincere prayer reflects humility and acknowledges that everything we possess is a trust from Allah. In our daily lives, Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu Alaihi Wasallam exemplified a simple and grateful life, reminding us that worldly life is merely temporary. By praying, we recognize our limitations and seek guidance and help from Him.
Etiquette of Prayer
There are specific etiquettes to observe when praying to ensure our prayers are accepted:
- Khufyah (Whispering Prayer): Pray softly and without showing off (riya), so that it is not visible to others and to maintain focus on Allah.
- Tadharru’ (Humbling Oneself): Acknowledge our weaknesses and helplessness before Allah, showing that we truly need Him.
- Khauf and Raja’ (Fear and Hope): Pray with full hope of acceptance while also incorporating fear if our prayers are not granted. This demonstrates our awareness of Allah’s power and our complete submission to Him.
Prayer as a Shield Against Satan’s Temptation
Satan often tempts humans after they pray, instilling doubt about the acceptance of their prayers. Therefore, it is essential to always seek refuge in Allah from Satan’s temptation and to continue praying with full confidence. Prayer can serve as a shield that protects us from uncertainty and doubt.

Prayer is an important means of communication between humans and Allah, a highly recommended form of worship, and a reflection of our faith and piety. By praying, we acknowledge Allah’s Oneness, seek His help, and strengthen our relationship with Him.
