Depok – Baznas Kota Depok officially inaugurated the Unit Pengumpul Zakat (UPZ) Al-Wafi Charity on Friday, July 26, 2024. Located within the premises of Al Wafi Islamic Boarding School, UPZ Al-Wafi Charity was established as an initial step towards recognition as a LAZNAS (National Zakat Management Institution) in accordance with government regulations on the collection of donations and charity. This UPZ is expected to effectively gather and distribute Zakat, Infaq, and Sedekah (ZIS) funds at both local and national levels.
UPZ Al-Wafi Charity aims not only to serve as a collecting agency for ZIS funds but also to be a driving force in distributing these funds to those entitled to them, in accordance with Sharia principles. With the establishment of this UPZ, Al-Wafi Charity, part of the Al Sudais Indonesia Foundation, aspires to become an educational-based ZIS management institution that can make a tangible impact both within the school environment and in the surrounding community and nationally.
Various social programs will be implemented by UPZ Al-Wafi, including scholarship provisions, support for preachers, and the construction of worship facilities such as mosques. These programs are designed with a wide variety of initiatives to ensure that the collected ZIS funds can provide maximum benefit to society.
During the inauguration, Baznas Kota Depok expressed optimism that UPZ Al-Wafi could serve as a model UPZ, not only in Depok but also nationally. This initiative is expected to encourage other educational institutions to participate in the organized and professional collection and distribution of ZIS.
“This is a significant first step, and we hope UPZ Al-Wafi can inspire other institutions. With collaboration and a shared commitment, we believe UPZ Al-Wafi will be a successful example of how educational institutions can actively contribute to social welfare through ZIS,” said the Vice Chairman of Baznas Kota Depok during his speech.
Ustadz Dr. Ali Saman Hasan, the supervisor of the Al Wafi Foundation, stated that the establishment of this UPZ is a first step towards a larger goal. “The effort to establish Al-Wafi as a UPZ is part of our journey towards recognition as a LAZNAS, in accordance with government regulations on the collection of donations and charity. In the future, with the status of Baznas, Al-Wafi will be legally able to gather donations and charity at a national level,” he said.
With the official launch of UPZ Al-Wafi, it is hoped that a synergy will be created between educational institutions and zakat management organizations, which will strengthen and expand the distribution of ZIS benefits to the community.
